What is Agentic AI?

AI systems that autonomously plan, execute multi-step tasks, and take actions in the world with minimal human intervention.

Agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence systems designed to operate with a high degree of autonomy — perceiving their environment, formulating multi-step plans, executing sequences of actions, and adapting to feedback without requiring human direction at each step. Unlike traditional AI tools that respond to single prompts, agentic systems pursue goals across extended time horizons, often invoking external tools such as web search, code execution, file access, APIs, and databases to complete complex objectives. The term encompasses a spectrum from simple tool-calling assistants to fully autonomous agents capable of spawning sub-agents and orchestrating entire workflows.

From an enterprise governance perspective, agentic AI introduces a qualitatively new risk profile. When an AI system can browse the web, write and run code, send emails, or interact with SaaS platforms, the blast radius of a misaligned instruction or a malicious prompt injection expands dramatically. Data exfiltration, unintended financial transactions, accidental deletion of critical records, and regulatory violations can all result from agentic systems acting on ambiguous or adversarially crafted instructions. Shadow agentic AI — employees deploying autonomous agents outside of sanctioned IT channels — compounds this risk because security teams may have no visibility into what actions these agents are taking on behalf of the organisation.

Governing agentic AI requires organizations to extend existing AI governance frameworks with agent-specific controls: scoped permission models that limit which tools and data sources an agent can access, human-in-the-loop checkpoints for high-stakes actions, audit logs that record every action taken by an agent, input and output monitoring for prompt injection and data leakage, and clear policies defining the approved use cases for autonomous agents. Frameworks such as NIST AI RMF and emerging EU AI Act guidance increasingly address agentic systems as a distinct governance challenge. Enterprises that deploy or permit agentic AI tools without appropriate oversight face compounded risks from both the technology itself and the regulatory landscape evolving around it.
