Leaders are feeling the pressure from two sides: employees experimenting with AI tools, and regulators tightening expectations. In August 2025, Fortuneprofiled a CEO who replaced ~80%of staff after pushback on AI. A headline-grabbing example of what happens when culture, skills, and governance aren’t addressed together.
Is that the route we recommend ?...Of course not, we favour support over shock.

1) The concern ( as I see it )
Shadow adoption is already here. Microsoft’s 2024 Work Trend Index reports that 75% of knowledge workers use generative AI, and many bring their own tools, creating both a productivity opportunity and a governance risk.
Unstructured rollouts backfire. Field evidence shows that AI can lift productivity and quality ,especially for less experienced staff, but performance falls when people apply AI to the wrong tasks or skip validation.
Rules are tightening.The EU AI Act phases in obligations from 2025 to 2026; the NIST Generative AI Profile(AI 600-1) is fast becoming a practical reference for enterprise controls.
Therefore: Shadow AI + Unclear skills + Rising obligations = a Fragile Mix. It is time to move from ad hoc usage to supported practice that is aligned with standards.
2) Perspective (what the strongest research actually says)
AI lifts output, especially for newer employees. Studies consistently show material productivity and quality gains when tasks align with AI’s strengths. In a large field study of ~5,100 support agents, AI raised productivity by~14–15% on average and more for novices; customer sentiment improved too.
There is a capability frontier. AI accelerates work inside its frontier (drafting, summarising, first pass analysis, common code patterns) and can hurt performance outside it (novel, high judgement tasks without proper checks). A Harvard/BCG experiment with hundreds of consultants found AI users completed more tasks, faster, and with higher quality — when tasks were inside AI’s strengths. Outside that frontier, over-reliance degraded results. In summary, task selection, guardrails, and coaching matter.
